Feet on the Street in Laurel

Every Thursday, neighbors in Laurel meet to walk around the neighborhood to help improve community safety. Credit: Amir Aziz

This weekly event is a neighborhood-based initiative to help neighbors meet one another, talk about living in the neighborhood, and share experiences. As the group walks along MacArthur Boulevard between 35th Avenue and High Street, they patronize businesses in the neighborhood. The walk is about 45 minutes. While walking and engaging with local merchants, the group wants to help improve community safety. 

Every Tuesday, 6 p.m, Ace Hardware parking lot, 4024 MacArtur Blv.d.

Stroy Moyd’s HellaFunny 510 Comedy at FLUID510

While Port Bar is getting ready to shutter its doors, some events are moving to its sister bar, FLUID510. In addition to the events from Port Bar, FLUID510 also has DJ nights, comedy shows, and brunch events. Unlike Port Bar, FLUID510 has a kitchen. Bay Area comedian Stroy Moyd, who also appeared on the STARZ television show Blindspotting, will host a comedy night every Thursday.

Laurel Lunar New Year

The yearly celebration will begin at the RE/MAX Parking Lot at 4232 MacArthur Blvd. with a blessing of the district, followed by a lion dance procession to visit the various businesses located on MacArthur Blvd. between 35th Avenue and High Street. Later that afternoon, there will be a gathering at Zhi Dao Guan, The Taoist Center at 3824 MacArthur Blvd., bring a dish to share and a canned good to donate to the Alameda Food Bank.

Lake Temescal Walking Waterhoods Tour

How did Lake Temescal come to be? Why does algae grow so well in the lake, making the water unswimmable? This hour-and-a-half cultural and historical guided walking tour will answer these and many other questions.

The Evolution of Jazz and Blues at Geoffrey’s Inner Circle

Every Sunday in February, Geoffrey’s Inner Circle, a music institution in downtown Oakland since 1993, will be hosting The Evolution of Jazz & Blues, a weekly event to highlight local blues and jazz musicians, as well as to provide historical context as to why Oakland was dubbed  the “Harlem of the West.” This event is part of the Activate Oakland grant program to organize community events and help revitalize neighborhoods, increase foot traffic in commercial districts, and improve public safety.

Every Sunday in February, 12 p.m. to 10 p.m., free to attend, 410 14th St.
