Peter Richardson teaches humanities and American studies at San Francisco State University. He has written critically acclaimed books about the Grateful Dead, Ramparts magazine, and radical author Carey McWilliams. His next book, on Hunter S. Thompson, is scheduled for publication next year by the University of California Press. Born in the East Bay and a Richmond resident, he received a Ph.D. in English from the UC Berkeley.

Glenn Burke, an ‘extravagantly gifted’ baseball player, paid a price for being gay
